According to Muslim tradition, the messenger of Islam met a delegation of Christians from Najran (in the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula). The story of their meeting and discussion is famous from the Sira of Ibn Ishaq. However, I found an alternate version in an early Qur'anic commentary written by Muqatil ibn Sulayman. This article was published in the Spanish journal Collectanea Christiana Orientalia 3 (2006).
One of the commonplaces of western public discourse about religions is that God is a God of love in all scriptures, or some such statement. Is it true? Here's a proof of my research on this claim. Read the published article in "Sacred Text: Explorations in Lexicography," Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala and Angel Urban, eds. (Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang, 2009).
Andrew Rippin and I wrote an article on the Qur'an for the collection titled, "The Islamic World." This is just a draft of the article. Read the polished version in "The Islamic World", Andrew Rippin, editor (London: Routledge, 2008).
